Four Important Things You Need To Know About Proper Tree Care And Pruning

Wesley Perry

If you have a large tree on your property, it can be very valuable, providing your home with shade and keeping it cool. When large trees are not cared for, they can also be a problem and danger to your property. Removing them may be something that needs to be done, but sometimes, proper care and pruning is all the old shade tree in your front yard will need. If you have an overgrown tree on your property, here are four important things that you need to know about care and pruning of trees:

1. Removing Dense Growth In The Canopy

In the canopy of your tree, there may be a lot of dense growth. This happens as new growth starts every growing season. Eventually, there is so much growth that new leaves and growth will not grow. It can also cause branches to be weighed down with too much growth. To solve this problem, you can remove extra growth in the canopy to allow more light to come through the tree and new growth.

2. Cutting Large Branches That Are Hazardous

Branches that are damaged, diseased and weighed down can be a hazard. When you are pruning, you will want to have these branches removed. Any branch that is too big can fall on you or your home. When it falls, it can also cause bark to be peeled off and leave the tree exposed to insects and disease. Cutting these branches will prevent these problems and help to keep your tree healthy.

3. Removing Split Branches From The Canopy

The canopy of your tree can also have split branches, which is where the large lead branch splits into two. You will want to cut these extra branches to keep your tree healthy and prevent awkward growth. This will help the canopy of the tree to grow healthier and prevent branches that are too heavy and can fall. It will also help the canopy of the tree to grow full and give the tree a more attractive appearance.

4. Trimming Limbs Away From Structures And Utilities

Utilities and structures can be a problem for trees. You do not want branches falling on your home or the power lines. To prevent this problem, it is a good idea to keep trees trimmed back a safe distance. You do not have to completely remove these branches, but keep them pruned away.  This may be something that you need to do regularly as the tree grows and branches continue to get closer to utilities and structures.

These are some things that you should know about proper care and pruning of the shade tree in your yard. If you have a tree that has overtaken your home, contact a tree service contractor to help you with some of these care and trimming needs to keep your tree.
