Keeping Both Your Trees And Your Lawn Healthy When Installing And Using An Automatic Sprinkler System

If you recently moved into a house with a large lawn, many trees, and no automatic sprinkler system, then you are in for many hours of hand watering each week during the hot summer months. However, by installing an automatic sprinkler system, you can keep your lawn green, keep your trees healthy, and yet not ever have to pick up a garden hose to accomplish the task.

It is important to note that since trees and lawns have different watering requirements, some special care needs to be taken during the sprinkler installation so the system works for both of them. 

The Watering Needs of Lawn vs. Trees

Lawn and other smaller landscaping plants need shallow and frequent watering. In contrast, trees need deeper and less-frequent watering. When installing an automatic sprinkler system, you need to always keep this discrepancy in mind.

Simply spraying water on the trunk of each tree with a bunch of sprinkler heads isn't ever the proper way to water them. Instead, you should install watering stakes or root watering systems that connect directly into the underground system. These devices allow more water to be released where the tree's roots are located without having to flood your lawn at the same time.

Regularly Watered Trees are Healthier Trees

When your trees are watered correctly and on a regular schedule, it makes them stronger. Additionally, it makes the trees healthier and less susceptible to tree diseases and insect infestations.

If not installed correctly, landscaping sprinkler systems can give trees too much water in the wrong places and cause problems with root rot. If the shallow roots of a tree are overwatered, then the roots won't grow deep enough due to an overabundance of oxygen in the soil. Shallow roots lead to trees that fall over in windstorms.

Be Mindful of Existing Tree Roots When Designing the Sprinkler System 

Installing sprinkler systems near trees can result in damage to their roots if you trench in the wrong place and accidentally cut them off. When designing your sprinkler system and figuring out the location of underground water pipes, make sure you avoid areas where major tree roots are likely to be located. By staying away from the roots, you can prevent damage when digging.

Consult with a Professional Arborist Before Installing a Sprinkler System

Finally, it is important to consult with an arborist before you have a sprinkler system installed. Arborists are tree specialists and will evaluate each type of tree and its location and advise you on the areas you need to avoid trenching or overwatering.
