3 Reasons To Have A Stump Removed

Wesley Perry

When you have a tree taken down in your yard, there is going to be a stump left over. The tree service may ask you whether or not you want to have the stump ground down so it's completely gone from your yard. If you do have the chance to grind it down, then you need to make sure that happens. If the tree service doesn't do it, then you need to do it yourself or hire someone else to do it. There are several reasons why you should get rid of the stump.

Regrowth

There is always a chance that the tree will start to sprout again from the stump. Not all tree species will do this, but some species will begin to regrow from the stump or exposed roots. The stump may send out suckers to try and get more nutrients for the regrowing tree, which can cause damage to other trees and plants and leave you with an ugly eyesore growing in your yard.

Pests

A stump can be really attractive to a lot of different kinds of pests. Small animals can use the stump as a shelter because it will make it hard for predators to get to them. All sorts of insects can move into the stump and build their nests. Termites can get into your stump, which can give them a foothold in your yard and make it easier for them to get into your house. Yellow jackets and wasps particularly like stumps, especially if there are any hollowed-out spaces in the stump. It gives them an excellent place to create a giant hive. Stinging insects generally aren't all that pleasant to have in your yard, and wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets can be aggressive, making them dangerous for you, your kids, and your pets.

Illness

If you had to have the tree cut down because it was sick, that disease, fungus, or other problem may still be in the stump. Because the stump is still in your yard, that can cause your other trees to end up sick as well, which means you will have to get rid of them too. It's just better to have the stump ground away when the tree is cut down.

If you have a tree removed, you need to have the stump removed as soon as possible. Talk to the stump grinding service which is handling your tree removal so that everything gets taken care of at the same time.
